5 Ways to Make a Relaxing Space

It’s safe to say that most of us have the same struggle of finding that work-life balance in our daily lives. As an entrepreneur, it can be even more difficult when you are juggling different clients, deadlines and the basic day-to-day tasks. Add in school, family and friends and it can get overwhelming pretty quickly. After a hectic day, you deserve a welcoming place to unwind and relax – not another source of overstimulation and stress!

For most of us, regular trips to the spa are out of the budget. But with a few simple adjustments, you can a similar relaxing and tranquil space in your home. Whether is it your patio, your bedroom or your garage, you can turn it into a tranquil place you can escape to when you need a moment of peace. Your relaxing space may be an entire room or a sectioned-off corner of a larger room. The idea is to put psychological distance between your special retreat and the rest of your home, even if the physical distance is not far.

I’ve put together some quick tips on how to set the mood and make any room relaxing!

Stank it up

I’m talking about the good stank! Incense, aromatherapy candles and heavy scented plants such as jasmine or lavender are the great way to add some aroma therapy to your space. Certain scents are therapeutic and can do amazing things for the mind and body. Whether you need to relieve stress or get energized, there is a scent to help you. Rosemary, grapefruit and lavender are some of my personal favs. You can always switch up the scent to match your mood – or your stress level!

Keep it clean

If you are a fellow creative, you may be comfortable with some clutter. But too much clutter can drive you crazy. It also affects your level of productivity and ability to focus, and that is not what you want for your relaxing space! Because clutter can happen quickly, make sure you keep this room organized with decorative storage boxes or bookshelves. The less items you keep in there the better, so try not to add too many items and decor. And make sure when you leave your space you tidy it up for next time.

Let there be life

Bringing in a few live plants is always a good idea. Plants are a powerhouse of wellness and pack a lot of benefits. Plus they are pleasing to the eye and help you feel more at ease. As you probably know, plants help to clear the air of carbon dioxide convert it into oxygen, making your space more breathable. Plants are living things, and being around living things will make you feel better. There is something about having nature in your space that brings a healthy and happy energy into the room.

Turn off the electronics

We already know that cable drains the brain. Engaging electronics such as TVs, laptops and tablets don’t belong in your relaxing space. These work on your physical body and mind and in the end can deprive you of sleep and drain your energy. Even your cell phone should not go in there with you if you can avoid it. The idea is not to associate your space with activities that make relaxation harder. Items such as a radio are ok, music is usually a great way to help you unwind. Basically, the more things your brain associates your relaxing space with, the less it will think of relaxing when you are in there. So make sure you keep the electronics at a minimum.

Make it you

This probably goes without saying, but make sure your space has some of you in it! Define your personal area by adding in your favorite decor pieces, wall paintings or any items that have special meaning to you. Photos, quotes or books are all nice additions to any relaxing room. Even a something like a rug or unique piece of furniture can become the foundation of your relaxation space.
