Earth Day Activities For Kids and Crunchy Mamas

Trying to come up with fun activities that will engage your kids and celebrate Earth Day? I got your back mama 🙂

Here are 3 of my favorite Earth Day activities you can do with the entire family:

Plant an Herb Garden

Planting an herb garden is a great way to teach your kids how grow their own food and our planet Earth at the same time. The great thing is, you can plant an herb garden anywhere, it is ideal for any space size. You can grow your garden outside or in the comfort of your kitchen. Either way, the process of planting is fun and engaging for the entire family! You can even let each kid design their own herb garden with the foods they love to eat most. To make your garden even more Earth Day friendly, grab a few recyclable plastic containers or even old unused furniture to use them as planters. Let the kids decorate their pots with stickers, tape, coloring, etc. Use organic seeds to start your garden on eco-friendly footing. You can typically buy them at your local supply store or farmer’s market.

Family Handyman Magazine has a great video to help you get your kiddies gardening in no time!

Cook a Vegan Meal

There’s actually an easy way to consistently help the environment (and yourself): go meatfree. Most people eat meat twice a day without even thinking about it. Yikes. But the amount of meat and fish we feast on is damaging our planet and our health. Why not give your kids some meatless alternatives? A great way to teach your kids to support our planet and the animals that we share it with is by going vegan with them for a day. Get them involved in the process and have them help you prepare a hearty meat-free meal for the entire family. You can find tons of great family vegan recipes – everything from main courses to sweet treats. There is something tasty and meat-free for everyone – and who knows, they might want to stick to it! Plus, you can put that new herb garden to use 😉

Check out Planet Umoja’s channel for quick and easy vegan recipes you can make this Earth Day, like these delicious Stuffed Rainbow Bell Peppers!

Paint Outdoors

On Earth Day, doing anything outside with your kids will help them have appreciation for our Earth. But the key is to get creative. Painting is a fantastic activity to take outdoors because it can be super messy (especially with younger kids) and this will make clean up so much easier for you mama! Plus, EVERYONE loves to paint, from kids to teenagers, to parents and even grandparents! It is a totally relaxing, creative activity that creates a memory you can keep around forever. You can even host an ‘Earth Day Painting Party’ and invite other families to join. There are all types of painting techniques and activities you can try with you kids depending on their age. Balloon painting, splatter painting, foot painting – the possibilities are endless! Just make sure you use water-based colors and do not allow kids to ingest any paint. If you are concerned about your little one eating the paint, consider making some homemade edible paints instead.

Personally, I really love this corn cob painting idea from TinkerLab’s page. Just save some corn from your Stuffed Rainbow Peppers 🙂
