I’m the first to admit, I don’t see a lot of movies. Tuesday New Releases are exciting to me due to the musical releases, not so much film. However, I do enjoy watching awards shows, and the kick off to the 2012 awards season, The Golden Globes, aired Sunday, January 15.
There are two things I love about the Golden Globes. One: It’s the only large scale awards show that’s shown live. We go straight from the red carpet to the actual show. There’s no waiting, and no hiding from all forms of social media for fear that a friend’s update will ruin the surprises of the show.
Second: the attendees spend the entire time drinking. As the show progresses, the audience gets looser and looser. It’s glorious.
With anything I watch I look for the musical relevance. It just so happens there is more music to the golden globes than the track they play when attempting to rush award winners through their speeches.
Adam Levine was in attendance, sans his Victoria’s Secret model girlfriend Anne Vyalitsyna, because of his participation in the show “The Voice†(NBC). Zooey Deschanel the voice of the group She & Him was there due to her adorable show “The New Girl†(FOX). Of course the entire Glee (FOX) cast showed up, and fellow Glee-k Jane Lynch present the award for Lead Actor in a Television Series.
Silent film “The Artist†won the Golden Globe for Best Original Score. This was the first Globe win for composer Ludovic Bource, who beat out scores for “W.E,†“Hugo,†Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor’s score for “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,†and the score for “War Horse†by veteran John Williams.
The darling of the ‘Globes was “The Help“, and “The Living Proof“ performed by Mary J. Blige was up for Best Original Song. Other nominees included Elton John, Chris Cornell, Glenn Close and Madonna. Honestly, I was shocked when Madonna took the award for her song “Masterpiece,†a song written for “W.E.†which is the movie she directed:
Not to say that Madonna is not deserving of awards. No contest, she is the one and only Madonna. But even she seemed unprepared for the win, beginning her acceptance speech with a string of um’s, and referring to the single as something she initially did not want to create. “The Living Proof†is heartfelt, like most of Mary J Blige’s hits, and it’s attached to a film that means a lot to so many. As much as it burns me up I have to remind myself that we still have the Oscars.
The 2012 Golden Globes were a good time. Ricky Gervais hosted with as much class as he could muster – thank goodness it wasn’t as harsh as last year. The stars looked beautiful, and the night went off without a hitch. I end my review of the show by leaving you with something to think about. Lindsay Lohan is in talks to play Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime movie about Taylor’s young adult life. That’s right.
