When we got the word that designer LaRayia Gaston and her brand Apuletown were headed to Art Basel this year, we knew we had to make an appearance! In case you aren’t familiar, Apuletown is the up and coming brand behind the #MermaidGang movement.
I have been tracking the Apuletown on Instagram over a year now and the brand has truly created a serious movement – a mermaid movement! I was able get over to the Apuletown pop-up shop at Brisky Gallery in Wynwood this past Friday to get a hands on look. My feedback? Her pieces are extremely well-made, detailed and UNIQUE! In addition to the great quality of materials, I really like how there is a variety of unisex styles – meaning girls and guys and both wear her styles. Everything from baseball jerseys, tanks, crop tops, shorts, snapbacks, bucket hats and dashikis – yes dashikis!
It was very hard for me to just choose one piece, but I could not keep myself away from the dashikis. I ended up choosing the one you see above, and I wore it the very next day. So comfy! I’m pretty short, so I wore it as a dress and paired it with my favorite knee-high gladiators. If your tall, you can wear it as a top and pair it with leggings, jeans, shorts or cool tights. No matter how you wear it I can guarantee you will turn heads and have everyone asking, “Where did you get that from?”
Below you can find some of my personal favorites from Apuletown. Be sure to check their online shop and keep up with Apuletown on Instagram!
