Dry Shampoo Recipes For Light And Dark Hair

When you have kids, work and all the other things that take up time in your life, it can be hard to squeeze in a little beauty hygiene. Saving time is everything when you become a mom, so if you can freshen up without a trip to the salon or store, why not? c

Dry shampooing has been a popular topic lately, mainly because it is an incredibly convenient way to clean your hair without water. Also, washing your hair too often (especially if you have ethic hair) can be bad for it. Our hair naturally produces oil to keep it moisturized, but too much washing causes it to dry out. Some women produce too much of this oil, which then leads to them feeling the need to clean it more often. If you happen to have hair that is greasy or oily, dry shampooing is a great way to help your hair stay clean in a lot less time.

Here are two DIY dry shampoo recipes you can use for your hair, whether its dark or light!

Now I already had my dry shampoo blended before I created this blog, so I apologize for not included the arrowroot and cornstarch in my photos! But I’ve included links to my favorite brands for both ingredients and where I bought them below.

Light Hair (Blonde)

  • ¼ cup Arrowroot Powder (You can find this at local grocery store or my favorite natural online shop Thrive Market)
  • 5 drops of your favorite essential oil (I love grapefruit for this)

Dark Hair

  • 1 tbsp Arrowroot Powder
  • 1 tbsp Corn Starch
  • 2 tbsp Cacao Powder ( you can also use Cocoa Powder)
  • 3-5 drops of your favorite essential oil (I like grapefruit, but if you are using cacao powder, cinnamon helps bring out that chocolately smell)

*Have a hair color that’s in between light and dark? Start with arrowroot powder and add cornstarch until you have a closer match! Dry shampoo should be slightly lighter than your actual hair color.

Mix together in non-metal bowl and store at room temperature. I keep mine in a small glass jar, but a plastic container works as well.

That’s it! To use the dry shampoo, I recommend using an old makeup brush and apply the powder directly to the roots and other oily parts of your hair. You can also apply with a hairbrush and then comb the powder through and style your hair is usual. I suggest using this at least 2 hours before you plan to leave your house as it takes time for the oils to absorb. You can also apply this before going to bed with a cap and your hair will be oil free by the time you wake up!

*Other products featured in this blog include the HSI Professional Classic 9 Row Styling Brush, Botanical SocietiesVegan Grapefruit Essential Oil, and Plantlife Cinnamon Leaf Essential Oil.
