Hello Mamas! If you are planning to have a vaginal birth, then YOU NEED PADSICLES for postpartum!
WTF is a padsicle? A padsicle is basically a cold healing pack that you make at home to help your lady parts heal after giving vaginal birth. You can make it with your favorite non-toxic maxi pads. It is cooling, soothing and will be your vagina’s new best friend 🙂
If you are a mom who has experienced the magic of natural birth, then you already know what’s up. Ouch, that’s what. I don’t want to go into too much detail here, but vaginal birth is painful. Really painful. In addition to other healing rituals, one of the midwives at my center recommended making padsicles, so I whipped up a batch about a month before I gave birth. I have to tell you, this was probably the most helpful DIY I have ever made.
Something that I learned along the way and many expecting women may not know is that it gets very hot down there. HOT. Especially when you get to the part where the baby is actually coming out. I have to admit the feeling of heat was pretty weird. It felt like a fire-breathing dragon was blowing through my birth canal. And then to top it off, there’s swelling, stretching and a whole other mess of things happening. I could not imagine what my postpartum experience would have been like without padsicles. It’s a scary thought.
That being said, if you are going to have a baby I highly recommend that you make your padsicles ahead of time. How many you need to make depends on long you will need to use them for. I ended up having a very small tear during the birth of my son, so I needed a bigger batch than what I originally made. I went through about 30 pads in a week and ended up having to make more to get through week 2. It’s up to you how much you make, but always better to have more than not enough!
And if you have a family member or friend who is expecting soon, these make a fantastic gift. Padsicle cake anyone?
To make these babies, typically you would use really large, thick maxi pads. But there are a lot of really great thinner pads that work really well and won’t make you feel like you are wearing a diaper. I chose to use Genial Day pads for this because of their thin design and ability to hold a lot without leaking. Also, they are skin-friendly and completely organic!
So let me not keep you waiting anymore ladies, here is the best DIY organic padsicles for postpartum ever:
What you need:
[tie_list type=”checklist”]
- Large pack of super absorbency pads (for this DIY we are using Genial Day organic pads)
- Aloe Vera gel (fresh is best, store bought gel also works)
- 1 tsp Witch Hazel (I prefer this one with rose water and aloe)
- 1/4 tsp Rosehip Oil (Pure, organic, cold-pressed)
- 5-10 drops Lavender essential oil (optional)
[/tie_list]*amount is what you need for each padsicle.
How to create:
[tie_list type=”heart”]
- Start by partially unwrapping the pads – do not remove them from the wrapper. Just open them up so you can get the ingredients on there.
- In a small bowl, whip Aloe Vera, Witch Hazel and Rosehip Oil together. If you are using fresh aloe, make sure you get it as smooth as possible.
- Apply mixture to the entire pad. Yes the whole thing, don’t just apply it down the middle. Trust me on this mamas.
- Finally, add a few drops of Lavender Oil down the middle if you’d like. Make sure you use a quality essential oil brand like DoTerra or Plant Therapy.
- Once you have added everything to the pad, you want to fold it right back into the packaging. Then place the padsicles in your freezer until it’s time to use them.

Why the Rosehip Oil? If you have seen other padsicle recipes this ingredient may not be included. But Rosehip Oil is magical for healing scars, so if you had tearing I suggest adding it to your recipe. Worked out great for me!
***Tip! Before using your padsicle, give it a quick rub between your hands. This will warm up the icicles that form on the pad so it doesn’t stick to your goodies. You’re welcome.
If you know how many padsicles you are making, you can adjust the recipe measurements to make a big batch at once.
