One of the first questions any new mom blogger asks herself is:
What the hell am I going to write about exactly?
The most important thing you need to do before you do anything is figure out your niche. I say this because it took me a while to really find my niche. Like years. Literally.
It can be hard trying to figure out what your mom blog should be about, mainly because it is a broad category. But you are not alone, and sometimes it does take a time to really hon in on what you want to write about and who you want to target.
When I decided to focus on bad ass, crunchy millennial mamas two years ago, I still wasn’t fully niched – even though I thought I narrowed it down pretty well. About one year into my blog, I realized I was really writing for bad ass crunchy millennial moms who want to become online mamapreneurs. Now as my blog grows I have gotten even more niched, focusing more on topics like growing traffic, work-life balance and entrepreneurship workshops in addition to my other content.
And I of course throw a little comedy in here and there 🙂
But my blog’s overall focus hasn’t changed. I still aim to help millennial moms everywhere take control of their dreams and bring them to reality. My goal of building a bad ass millennial mamapreneur squad is coming true day by day, and it all starting happening once I identified my niche.
Here are a few things to consider when trying to figured out your mom blog niche:
1. WHAT ARE YOU REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT?
Passion is everything when it comes to entrepreneurship. If it doesn’t keep you up at night and you’re not obsessing over it everyday, then it’s probably not the right niche for you.
A great way to figure out what you want to consistently write about is to make a list of your favorite hobbies. What sticks out to you? Which hobby do you spend the most time on?
Maybe you enjoy gardening with you children. Maybe you enjoy creating allergy-free recipes for you and your kids. Perhaps you have a great sex life after children and want to share some tips. Get it?
The key is to find something that you will enjoy writing about for a long time. One thing you don’t want to do is switch your niche around too much! You will confuse your audience and potentially drive them away. This doesn’t mean you always write about the exact same topic, but you definitely need to make sure you have a clear direction that your future fans can grasp right away.
2. WHAT DO YOU HAVE SOLID KNOWLEDGE ABOUT?
It is important that you have some sort of solid knowledge about whatever you’re writing about on your mom blog. I’m not saying you have to have a degree or be a full on expert, but you should at least have done your research or have some experience with what you are talking about. You need to be able to give your readers a positive result from reading your blog, so make sure you can back up what you post.
Whatever area you have experience in, you can likely use it as your niche.
Many mom bloggers come from corporate or professional backgrounds and have great knowledge to share. There are also mom bloggers just write about their own family or things they have gone through without really giving any advice at all. To me, the best mom bloggers have real, raw experience which making them super relatable to other moms.
3. WILL YOU BE FILLING A NEED IN YOUR COMMUNITY?
Keep in mind that there are THOUSANDS, maybe millions of mom blogs out there. And to be honest, a lot of the niches are already overdone. So this is usually the hard part.
A great way to see what your target audience might be looking for is to do some easy research. Facebook and Pinterest are excellent sources to start with, plus they are the main social media platforms used by moms.
On Facebook, you can join a few groups and use the search feature to research the topics you want. This way, you can see if they are already being covered and what questions people are asking around those topics. One of those questions could become your future niche!
With Pinterest, you can do a quick search and see which fellow mom bloggers are covering what. That way you stay away from topics that have already been covered to death.
In all honesty, you will probably still end up covering some of the same things at some point. But at the end of the day, what will make your blog unique is YOU.
4. CAN YOU ACTUALLY MAKE MONEY FROM IT?
Blogging is great – it’s fun and a wonderful way to express yourself and share information. But if your aiming to leave your 9-5 job and make it as a full-time mom blogger, you must figure out how you will monetize your niche. This could mean selling services, developing a product, hosting events, creating sponsored content for other brands, affiliate marketing, opening an e-shop – the list is endless. You may end up doing a little of everything over time, but eventually you will want to focus in on your main income sources.
In my case, running e-shop, creating events and writing content are now my main thangs. And I freaking love it 🙂
If you can answer those four important questions, you can find your mom blog niche. BOOM.

Thanks for this tips, as a mum blogger for over 3 years now I still struggle with finding my niche- I tend to do a little of everything- lifestyle, fashion, parenting & career.
This is very helpful. I am just starting out and still need to find out where to fit in. Thanks for sharing this.
Very helpful, i love reading about how other moms have gone about approaching their blogs. I am passionate about working moms, and moms being okay with having a career (I also work in HR so its sorta my thang). so thats where I am right now 🙂 Its a bit of a career blog for moms
